KIC raises awareness of the positive role young people play in our local communities. Our annual awards play an important role in ackowledging such participation and are a public celebration of support for and by young people in our community.

Media Awards

The Kids in Community – Media Reporting on Youth Awards acknowledge the important and powerful role of the media in influencing public opinion about young people and youth issues.

The Awards are designed to encourage the media to look beyond the sensational and report stories that more accurately reflect the positive and valued contribution that our local youth make to their communities.

The Kids in Community – Media Reporting on Youth Awards complement the annual Kids in Community Awards, which aim to elevate the image of youth by celebrating those who positively address issues affecting young people and their communities.

Peer Support

This award recognises a person or group who shows leadership and a caring attitude to another young person or persons. This award recognises the efforts of a young person or youth group in promoting the positive attitudes and actions of Indigenous youth. The nominee could be a source of inspiration within the Indigenous community, a person or group whose efforts motivate and assist other youth. The nominee could also be a person or group who fosters Reconciliation by helping to build positive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth to facilitate understanding, respect, friendship and support.

As an example, the nominee may have faced challenges related to health, disability, family circumstance, cultural factors or geographic isolation. Nominators are encouraged to provide details/examples of the specific challenges/obstacles that the nominee has encountered. Details concerning those nominated in this category are held in strict confidence by the judges of the Award and the KIC committee.

This award acknowledges a person of any age who, at some time, has provided long-term personal support to an individual between the ages of 13 and 25. The nominee for this award may have provided general support, or support in a specific area such as work, sport, study, spirituality, social or family life. The parents or primary carers of the individual being mentored are not eligible for nomination.

Group or Individual Supporting Youth or Youth Programs

This award acknowledges the efforts of an individual of any age, or a community group, who has provided support for young people or is involved in a program that supports, educates, or assists in the personal development of young people between the ages of 13 and 25. Examples of nominees include: a Police Officer, taxi/bus driver, teacher or other individual sensitive to youth issues, or a local business who has provided youth support. Organisations, such as church, youth, sporting or community groups may also be nominated. Nominees for this award deserve recognition because their actions go above and beyond the call of duty: they demonstrate an inspiring sense of care and responsibility for their fellow human beings.
