KiC Awards – Nomination Categories

Media Reporting on Youth Awards are separate to the Kic Awards.

1. Peer Support Div 1: 13 – 18 years Div 2: 19 – 25 years

This award recognises a person or group who shows leadership and a caring attitude to another young person or persons. The nominee may have made someone feel more comfortable, helping enhance a sense of personal dignity and worth. The nominees' support may have provided positive guidance or direction for a young person, or increased their sense of connection to the wider community.

2. Community Support Div 1: 13 – 18 years Div 2: 19 – 25 years

This award recognises a person or group who has made a valuable contribution to the community. Assisting or providing companionship to elderly, ill or disabled community members could evidence this contribution, or the nominee may have undertaken volunteer work in community organisations (e.g. Meals on Wheels, Doorknock Appeals, SES, Bushfire Brigade, Riding for the Disabled, Surf Lifesaving Clubs).

3. Indigenous Youth Support Div 1: 13 – 18 years Div 2: 19 – 25 years

This award recognises the efforts of a young person or youth group in promoting the positive attitudes and actions of Indigenous youth. The nominee could be a source of inspiration within the Indigenous community, a person or group whose efforts motivate and assist other youth. The nominee could also be a person or group who fosters Reconciliation by helping to build positive relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth to facilitate understanding, respect, friendship and support.

4. Homeless Youth Support Div 1:  13 - 18 years Div 2: 19 – 25 years

The individual or group nominated for this award has given short- or long-term support to a young person who is homeless or in a situation where they have had to leave their home. This support could be in the form of providing safe accommodation and/or meals, supplying advice or help related to the access of appropriate support services, providing emotional support or assisting the young person's return to their home.

5. Against All Odds Div 1: 13 – 18 years Div 2: 19 – 25 years

This award recognises a young person who has triumphed against odds and, with optimism, hope and courage, inspires others in our community. As an example, the nominee may have faced challenges related to health, disability, family circumstance, cultural factors or geographic isolation. Nominators are encouraged to provide details/examples of the specific challenges/obstacles that the nominee has encountered. Details concerning those nominated in this category are held in strict confidence by the judges of the Award and the KIC committee.

6. Role Model   13 – 25 years

This award recognises a young person whose words and actions are worthy of emulation. The nominee may consistently show courtesy or kindness towards others, setting a positive example for their peers. The nominee may be someone whose accomplishments serve as a source of inspiration, encouraging other youth to realise their own potential and succeed in their ambitions. Nominees in this category are usually admired for the commitment they demonstrate in achieving their goals and for behaviour that reflects high standards and values.

7. Mentor   Open Age

This award acknowledges a person of any age who, at some time, has provided long-term personal support to an individual between the ages of 13 and 25. The nominee for this award may have provided general support, or support in a specific area such as work, sport, study, spirituality, social or family life. The parents or primary carers of the individual being mentored are not eligible for nomination.

8. Group or Individual Supporting Youth or Youth Programs Open Age

This award acknowledges the efforts of an individual of any age, or a community group, who has provided support for young people or is involved in a program that supports, educates, or assists in the personal development of young people between the ages of 13 and 25. Examples of nominees include: a Police Officer, taxi/bus driver, teacher or other individual sensitive to youth issues, or a local business who has provided youth support. Organisations, such as church, youth, sporting or community groups may also be nominated. Nominees for this award deserve recognition because their actions go above and beyond the call of duty: they demonstrate an inspiring sense of care and responsibility for their fellow human beings.
